Teething

Ugh...

Ever since Little P started teething I have counted myself among the luckiest moms on the planet. I have never had to give him teethers or medicine for pain, never had to clean up 25 gallons on drool daily, never had to comfort him or dry his tears because his mouth hurt, and never had to hold an all night vigil over my little lump of hot lava because he had a major fever.

Until last night.

Little P is getting all four of his eye teeth at the same time, and this is a most miserable experience for everyone involved. Yesterday morning he had a bit of a fever, and was chewing ferociously on his fingers, blanket, cup, sock, anything he could find; so I gave him a half dose of Motrin and we went about our day with only slight discomfort.

At 7pm all hell broke loose; Paul had a temp of 102 (still not awful), and was absolutely inconsolable. We tried to put him to sleep, he tried to put himself to sleep, even, but it was not to be. He finally settled down and went to sleep at 10pm... for 15 minutes.

I was reading in my room when I heard a most unearthly "Maaaaahhhhhmmmmmyyyy" come from Little P's room. I went in and he was sitting on his bed asking for water. Another 15 minutes later he was calling again, then again, then again. All night. Sometimes it was only 5 minutes later and sometimes it was 40 minutes later that he called, and I was worried for him and could not sleep myself because his fever refused to break and fevers aways freak me out (due to my brother getting brain damage from a fever when he was a baby).

Anyway, long night short, I finished an entire book between 7pm and 6am, when Paul's fever broke and he finally fell into decent sleep. He woke up in a much better mood at 11:30 this morning, but he is worn out and I am sure we will be taking a nap very soon.

I hope he does not have another night like this, and I am profoundly sorry for any mommy who has had to spend more than one sleepless teething night with her baby!

Oh and sorry about Paul's bad night. At least you got to read. We will look at the positive.
